Study done on Effect of a Nutritional Intervention on Childhood Caries
As reviewed by Seow in a recent edition of the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice conducted and reported a randomized clinical trial that demonstrated that nutritional advice during the first year of life decreases the incidence and severity of caries at 4 years of age in a low-income community. As randomization led to homogeneous comparison groups, we were surprised at the commentary accompanying the review, which criticized our study for its “lack of control for confounding variables, which affects the interpretation of the findings.” (p. 61). Further, this critique gave special emphasis to the fact that we did not adjust for hypoplasia and plaque control in our analyses. The commentary seemed more directed to an observational study than a randomized trial. (Source: Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice)
