Children dental care, Posterior neonatal teeth
A baby can be born with teeth or they can have teeth that erupt early with in the first month of life. These are called natal teeth and or neonatal teeth. These neonatal teeth are usually the normal primary incisor teeth erupting early.
Due to this early eruption, the tooth will normally not be fully developed. While the majority of the tooth crown will be formed, the tooth root structure is not normally fully developed. A dentist will be able to advise if this tooth can be left alone in hopes it will harden or if it needs to be removed.
Since neonatal teeth are usually baby teeth or primary a new baby tooth will not replace neonatal teeth once they are lost. This premature loss of a neonatal tooth will normally not effect permanent teeth yet to come in. Though a dentist may advise having space maintainers so that permanent teeth can come in normally.
Most dental insurance plans offer space maintainers with in their preventive dental care benefits. Which helps keep the cost for space maintainers affordable.
