I would suggest to get dental insurance plan. At this point since you need a root canal an HMO plan may be your best option since they normally do not have waiting periods.
Also you can get any of our dental discont plans as a low cost option too. They are very affordable dental plans and will reduce your cost of getting the root canal. Also they start within the next businuess day of your on line enrollment which if you are in any pain right now may be the better way to go.

I live in NJ as well and dental insurance was just too costly with me being a full time student and only working part time. It did not leave me with much spending money for dental.
I found a dental discount plan called DentalSave + It really helped me with the cost of my dental services. I had it now for a year and I am really glad I got it. With all of what I needed the cost of the plan is nothing compared to the savings you get.
