Discount Dental Plans are they a Good Dental Insurance Alternatives

Living in New Jersey with a very fixed income.  I can not afford for the cost of dental insurance.  I am finding dental insurance to be over what I can afford to spend but I an not sure about dental discount plans since I never had one before.  Are they are good alternative to getting dental insurance when you can not afford much?
